Part 1.
I knew I wanted to be screenwriter........
when I saw Star Wars when I was 7 years old.
I know I've succeeded........
when I see people touched/mesmerized by this script or any
other future script on the big screen.
My
inspiration to write NANO.....
was the ever worsening corruption of the pharmaceutical industry. With NANO it is
my intention to speculate what kind of a grim future
scenario we are heading for.
Part 2.
FilmMakers
Magazine:
What
inspired you to write?
Piotr
Ryczko:
A packed audience screaming, laughing and scared at the movie theatre.
And the emotional rollercoaster of a story well told with deeply resonating characters.
FilmMakers Magazine: How did you prepare yourself to write your first script?
Piotr
Ryczko:
My first script was done completely intuitively and with
complete disregard for the craft, which any self respecting
writer should learn to use and then ultimately to forget.
FilmMakers Magazine: Is this your first script
and how long did it take you to complete?
Piotr Ryczko: No this is my third feature length
script. I've also written about 12 short film scripts of
which 6 have been shot and garnered about 40 international
film awards. It took about a month to research NANO and then
4 months to write the story.
FilmMakers Magazine: Do you have a set
routine, place and time management for writing?
Piotr Ryczko: I write every day as much as possible.
After getting script development funding from the Norwegian
Film Institute (NANO) I am fortunate enough to be able to
write full time.
FilmMakers
Magazine: Do you believe screenplay contests are
important for aspiring screenwriters and why?
Piotr Ryczko: Definetly. I think they are key to
getting noticed, to gauge the response. And to network and
learn.
FilmMakers
Magazine: What influenced you to enter the FilmMakers
International Screenwriting Awards
/ Screenplay Contest?
Piotr Ryczko: The main thing which influenced me was
how seriously Filmmakers are promoting the artists and the
success stories from many writers to actually find a rep and
move on to development/production.
FilmMakers Magazine: What script would you
urge aspiring writers to read and why?
Piotr Ryczko: Those are
many. But anything on the Black List is a must. From the
older stuff I recommend 12 monkeys, ET and
anything by William Goldman.
FilmMakers
Magazine: Beside screenwriting what are you passionate
about and why?
Piotr Ryczko: I am very passionate about directing as
this is the thing which got me started in the first place.
FilmMakers Magazine: Who is your favorite
Screenwriter and Why?
Piotr Ryczko:
Christopher Nolan is my favorite screenwriter. Dark
Vision, perfect execution of the script and deeply
flawed characters.
FilmMakers
Magazine: Name the director you would love to work with
and why?
Piotr Ryczko: I would love to work with Christopher
Nolan because of his dark and uncompromising cinematic
universe.
FilmMakers
Magazine: Name the actor you would love to work with and
why?
Piotr Ryczko: Benedict Cumberbatch because this man
can truly be the ambivalence of the misunderstood hurt soul
and at the same time a pure psychopath.
FilmMakers Magazine: Any tips and things
learned along the way to pass on to others?
Piotr Ryczko: I would urge everyone to keep hammering
away at the craft to get that perfect. And parallel to
the craft, keep asking yourself, why do I want to tell this
story? I believe that if there is a deeper inner reason, the
thing we are writing will in some way reverberate in others.
FilmMakers
Magazine: What's next for you?
Piotr Ryczko: I am writing two scripts now.
One is
the true story of one of the spiritual giants
from the last century and his ultimate downfall. All this
wrapped up in one of the craziest
stories of crime, drugs, guns, prostitution and terrorism on
the american soil.
The other one is a near future sci-fi movie commenting on
gene manipulation and designer babies future we are heading
for. Much in the vain
of the script “NANO" but lower budget (think Lo-fi).
FilmMakers Magazine: Where will you be five
years from now?
Piotr Ryczko: My aim is to have made my film
directing debut in Poland/Norway and one of my scripts which
are intended more for the international market will
hopefully catch on overseas.
